Freeman homered in Atlanta’s last two games against Houston in the 2021 World Series, and he has connected in all four games of this one, breaking his tie with Springer and setting a new record. He became the first player to homer in the first four games of a World Series.
Gerrit Cole was excellent over 6.2 innings, but some poor defense from the Yankees — including Cole himself — led to five unearned runs in the fifth. The Dodgers then took the lead for good in the eighth and got a stunning performance from their bullpen, especially Blake Treinen and Walker Buehler, to close it out.
An inning later, Buehler started to get loose. When Treinen got out of it, inducing a popup of Stanton and a strikeout of Rizzo, it set the stage for Buehler to get the most unlikely of ninth innings imaginable. His teammates felt confident.
The Yankees will appreciate the change of scenery, as they return home down 2-0 to the Dodgers in the series. Game 3 will feature Clarke Schmidt and Walker Buehler starting on the mound, but the teams will get a chance to catch their breath first.
How will the bullpens line up after the starter?Dodgers: Anthony Banda, Alex Vesia, Michael Kopech and Blake Treinen pitched in both games and could be somewhat limited heading into Game 3. Having the off-day does help, but the Dodgers will need to be mindful of the fact that they have a bullpen game lined up for Tuesday’s Game 4. But if the Dodgers take an early lead and have an opportunity to win a third game in the series, Roberts will be aggressive with his high-leverage relievers.
