The next batter, Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman – named the World Series MVP after his incredible series – singled to center, driving in two runs and making the score 5-3. Then Dodgers left fielder Teoscar Hernandez hit a double to center, driving in two more to tie the contest at 5-5. All five runs in the inning were unearned.
Can Flaherty keep it going? He has been hot and cold this postseason, and in many ways his whole career. If the Dodgers get Good Flaherty, they could finish this off Wednesday. If they get Bad Flaherty, everyone may be heading back to Los Angeles for Game 6. The Dodgers came into the series just hoping their rotation could hold up. It has turned out to be their strength. They need it to remain so.
Who are the starting pitchers?Dodgers: RHP Walker Buehler (1-6, 5.38 ERA in the regular season)Buehler’s regular season didn’t go as expected once he returned from a second Tommy John surgery, but the right-hander has had a strong postseason for the Dodgers. Buehler’s final line against the Padres in NLDS Game 3 looks worse than his overall performance. He then bounced back in a pivotal Game 3 in the NLCS, tossing four scoreless innings against the Mets.
Let us not forget that one of the primary storylines heading into this series concerned whether Freeman would even be available to play, and if so, if his sprained ankle would continue to hinder him. Instead, he’s blasting homers every night and even got down the line quickly to beat out a potential ground-ball double play to bring home another run in Game 4.
The Dodgers trailed 5-0 after four innings after the Yankee bats started off hot with back-to-back home runs from Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the first inning. They were the first back-to-back homers for the Bronx Bombers in the World Series since Thurman Munson and Reggie Jackson did it in Game 5 in 1977, also against the Dodgers.
It’s extremely difficult to believe the Yankees will force this World Series to go the distance, much less win, without the MVP version of Judge. For the second straight day, the Dodgers’ starting pitcher completely neutralized Judge’s bat. Game 1 starter Jack Flaherty and Game 2 starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto combined to strike out Judge five times in six at-bats and didn’t allow him to reach base. Yamamoto especially looked confident facing the player who recorded the highest OPS (1.159) in baseball this season.
• With Soto and Hernández, this was the third time that two Dominican-born players homered in the same World Series game. The other two instances were both in 2011, when the Rangers and Cardinals faced off in the Fall Classic. Nelson Cruz and Albert Pujols went yard in Game 3, then Cruz and Adrian Beltré did so in Game 6.

A two-run home run by Yordan Alvarez in the top of the second inning gave the Astros an early lead. In the top of the fourth, Carlos Correa hit another two-run home run, extending Houston’s lead to 4–0. Ross pitched for five innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out one batter. Years ago, Ben Lindbergh did the research and found World Series winners re-sign their own free agents at a higher rate than other teams, and that makes sense. There’s an emotional component to those signings, plus it can be easy to fall into the „we have the magic formula“ trap and think you need to keep the band together. The Nationals were no different. They re-signed Strasburg, Kendrick, Hudson, Aníbal Sánchez, and others to deals that didn’t work out at all. And on top of that their other signings (Harris, Lester, etc.) largely backfired. Washington’s attempts to complement what was left of their core worked out very poorly.
As for this year’s LCS competitors, the Rangers grabbed their first victory in two tries in a Game 7, dropping the Astros to 2-4. The D-backs won their only previous chance — beating the Yankees in a memorable Game 7 of the 2001 World Series — prior to winning Game 7 of the ’23 NLCS vs. the Phillies.
